Trade Occupational Licensing

The Council of Australian Governments (COAG) at its meeting in Sydney last week announced an agreement to develop a national trade licensing system that will remove inconsistencies across State boundaries and allow for a much more mobile workforce.  COAG's intention is to sign of on the national licensing system when it next meets in December 2008.

The system proposed will see a national approach to licensing in a range of economically important trades.  Initially several trades important to AMCA members are on the priority list.  These include: --

  • Air-conditioning and refrigeration mechanics.
  • Building occupations.
  • Electrical occupations.
  • Plumbing occupations.

Based on the experience in the past two years of attempting to improve the mutual recognition of plumbing trade occupations this will not be an easy task.  While State governments agree on the desired outcome, regulatory bodies in the states often inhibit the process.

Developments in this area will be an important and priority task for AMCA in the coming months.

Managing Financial Resources

The 2008 AMCA Australia Managing Financial Resources Course was held last weekend.  14 participants from around the country attended.  Feedback from the participants was excellent.  Many commented that they will definitely apply the concepts learned when back in the business.

Managing financial resources can be a complex subject for those of us who do not have some accounting background.  This program delivered by AMCA in conjunction with the Australian Institute of Management has been very successful at demystifying the subject.  Based on the feedback from participants I think we will need to look for a new venue in 2009.

New OHS Regulations Now in Force

From 1 July 2008, the construction part of Victoria's Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 2007 came into force.  These regulations impose new obligations on employers involved in construction work performed in Victoria.  Further details on these new arrangements can be obtained from Peter Verberne.
