Maintain Essential Safety Measures (VIC)

This unit of competency provides students with the skills and knowledge required to maintain heating, ventilation and air conditioning related essential safety measures (ESMs), including fire and smoke control measures of air handling systems.
  • Responsibilities and statutory requirements of building owners, contractors and maintenance technicians.
  • Different types of systems and their installation
  • Maintenance of fire protection systems and equipment (AS1851)
  • Use of ventilation and air-conditioning in buildings (AS1668)
  • Microbial control of air handling systems (AS3666)
  • Relevant aspects of the Building Code of Australia, building and plumbing regulations.

Outcomes

Students who successfully complete this course will receive a Statement of Attainment from Box Hill Institute for Maintain Building Essential Safety Measures (VU20874).

Completion of this unit can also be used as an elective unit for the Course in Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning Services (22329VIC).

Target audience

Learner background

This unit is suitable for refrigeration and air conditioning technicians responsible for installing, commissioning, servicing, repairing and maintaining residential or commercial refrigeration and air conditioning systems

Prerequisites

While there are no specific entry requirements, students are expected to have a trade level qualification or equivalent experience in a Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning related occupation.

Delivery and assessment

This two-day course is delivered by a qualified trainer at the Refrigeration and Climate Control Centre of Excellence, Box Hill Institute.

The practical assessment for this unit includes:

  1. Carry out building inspection and maintenance of essential safety measures (Assessed during course)
  2. Plan maintenance and collate ESM checklist (Take home activity to be returned within 30 days)
  3. Maintaining ESM records (Take home activity to be returned within 30 days)

The essential skills and knowledge required for this unit include:

Skills:

  • Test air handling changeover under fire/smoke conditions
  • Test fire isolated escape routes protected by air-pressurisation systems
  • Use test instruments
  • Carry out performance testing
  • Report faults and recommend solutions
  • Sign off and submit documentation

Knowledge:

  • Types of essential safety measures (ESM)
  • Types of buildings and ESM requirements based on occupancy permit
  • Building Code of Australia, regulations and legislation
  • Legal requirements and responsibilities
  • Maintenance participants and responsibilities
  • Maintenance, inspection and testing standards
  • Documentation types and their purpose

Fees

This course is offered by Box Hill Institute at the industry rate of $440.

Refund and cancellation policy

This course is subject to the Terms and Conditions offered by Box Hill Institute of TAFE.

Cancellation Policy

The AMCA reserve the right to cancel, postpone or reschedule events and training courses due to insufficient interest or other reasons beyond our control. In the instance that events or training courses are cancelled, a full refund will be given.

Refund Policy

A full refund will be given if the AMCA is notified in writing a minimum of 4 business days prior to the course commencement date. A 50% administration charge will be incurred if the AMCA is notified within 3 business days or less. No refund will be given if the AMCA is not notified of cancellation.
